Cell Phone Radiation Scandal: More Exposure Than Manufacturers Claim“PhoneGate” In France, government data release reveals 9 out of 10 phones tested exceed regulatory limits.
(Washington, DC) Under court order, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) of France has just disclosed that most cell phones exceed government radiation limits when tested the way they are used, next to the body. Manufacturers are not required to test phones in shirt or pants pockets. French government tests on hundreds of cell phones reveal that in 2015, 9 out of 10 phones exceed the manufacturer’s reported radiation test levels when re-tested in positions where the phone is in contact with the body.

French government tests on hundreds of cell phones reveal that in 2015, 9 out of 10 phones exceed the manufacturer’s reported radiation test levels when re-tested in positions where the phone is in contact with the body.
The government had refused to disclose these test results until the court order.Children handed cell phones as toys.On June 1, 2017,
ANFR posted the details of the make, model and test results for each phone that was tested, after months of legal action by French physician Dr. Marc Arazi. Arazi’s request for the information was initially denied. Popular brands such as Apple, Motorola, Samsung and Nokia were among the cell phone models tested. When tested in contact with the body, some phones have test results as high as triple the manufacturer’s previously reported radiation levels. “As a physician, I am deeply concerned about what this means for our health and especially the health of our children. People have a right to know that when cell phones are tested in ways people commonly use phones – such as in direct contact with their body – the values exceed current regulatory limits. This is a first victory for transparency in this industry scandal,” commented Arazi.Ricocheting in headlines throughout France, Arazi and his colleagues have coined the situation as “PhoneGate” because of the parallels to “Diesel Gate” – the Volkswagen emissions saga. Devra Davis, PhD, President of Environmental Health Trust explained, “Volkswagen cars passed diesel emission tests when tested in laboratory conditions, but when the cars were driven on real roads, they emitted far more fumes. In the same way, every one of these cell phones ‘passed’ laboratory radiation SAR tests. These phones are legally considered compliant. However, when these phones are tested in the ways that people actually use them in real life, such as in your jeans pocket or bra, the amount of absorbed radiation emissions in our bodies violates the regulatory limits.” “This is an enormous international scandal. This is not only about France and Europe, as this applies to all persons who use cell phones in every country. If phones were tested in the ways we use them, they would be illegal,” stated Dr. Davis, pointing out that these findings were replicated earlier by a US FCC certified laboratory as part of an investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Findings of higher radiation levels than expected (and even higher after phones are fixed) were also documented by the Holon Institute of Technology in Israel and featured on Israeli news.“Far more concerning is that the regulatory limits do not protect the public from adverse health effects related to long-term exposures,“ Davis commented, pointing to recently published research. A study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found cell phones associated with a doubled risk of glioma, a type of brain cancer. Studies performed by the US National Toxicology Program found glioma and DNA damage increased in rats exposed to long-term cell phone radiation.“I see children cradling cell phones in their laps as their mothers do grocery shopping. Teenagers are sleeping with cell phones placed on their chest or directly beside their heads all night long. Pregnant women put cell phones and wireless devices on their abdomen. Parents have a right to know that when children use cell phones in these ways, their bodies are absorbing wireless radiation at levels that exceed limits set for adults 20 years ago,” stated Theodora Scarato, Program Director at Environmental Health Trust, referring to how the American Academy of Pediatrics has repeatedly called on the US Government to update cell phone testing to reflect current use patterns. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued clear recommendations to reduce cell phone radiation exposures to children.

Men take note: Storing your cellphone in your pants pocket may result in impaired sperm, lower testosterone and may cause infertility. New research suggests that carrying around a cellphone in your pocket could lower sperm motility and viability.
Previous research has suggested that Radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) emitted by the devices can have a detrimental effect on male fertility. Most of the global adult population own mobile phones, and around 14% of couples in high and middle income countries have difficulty conceiving.
Until now, the research on the existence of an smartphone-sperm apocalypse has sent mixed signals. So, a team led by Dr Fiona Mathews, of Biosciences at the University of Exeter, conducted a “meta-study” or study of studies published in the journal Environment International on June 10, 2014 – Which found that cell phone usage was associated with an 8.1 percent descent in sperm motility (how fast the little guys swim) and 10 percent change in sperm viability (if they can make it to the egg alive).
“Given the enormous scale of mobile phone use around the world, the potential role of this environmental exposure needs to be clarified. This study strongly suggests that being exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation from carrying mobiles in trouser pockets negatively affects sperm quality,” explained University of Exeter’s professor Fiona Mathews.
“This could be particularly important for men already on the borderline of infertility, and further research is required to determine the full clinical implications for the general population.”
1. Brain damage
There is evidence that long time cell phone usage affects brain tissue in a negative way.
It’s also a studied fact that cell phone usage weakens the blood and brain barrier which then allows more toxins and chemicals to disturb your hypothalamus and pineal gland, this eventually leads to lower levels of circulating testosterone.
Evidence linking cell phone radiation to brain tumors is being supported by a growing body of evidence!
Research published by Dr. Lennart Hardell indicates that brain tumor risk increases with more years of cell phone use. Proving the effects of cell phone radiation are cumulative with more hours of use, those with the most usage had a 300% increase in having a brain tumor on the same side as a cell phone was most used.
2. Disturbs sleep cycles
In a Saudi-Arabian study the researchers found out that mobile networks caused fatigue and headache. In the study they also noted that eventually when you go to sleep with your mobile phone next to you, the mobile networks will disturb your normal sleeping cycles, by making the REM-stages shorter.
A small 2008 study found that participants took an average of six minutes longer to reach deep sleep after being exposed to mobile phone radiation. They also spent an average eight minutes less time in the deepest stage of sleep. This is believed to be the most refreshing part of the sleep cycle
‘We can now say that exposure to radiation before bed – at a level equivalent to making a call on a mobile for 30 minutes – does seem to lead to a small increase in electrical activity in the brain,’ says Dr Sarah Loughran of the Australian centre for electromagnetic bioeffects research at the University of Wollongong.
3. Erectile dysfunction
In a recent erectile dysfunction study the researchers found out that men who had serious case of ED were 2.6 times more likely to keep their mobile phones in the front pocket.
This has something to do with the fact that your phone would then be very close to your package, which would eventually disturb your testicles ability to produce testosterone.
4. Oxidative stress damage – (ROS)
Studies also show that cell phone radiation is very well capable of causing oxidation damage in the cells.
There’s no point of eating any antioxidants to improve testosterone levels if you keep your phone next to your balls everyday, since the radiation will oxidize the leydig cells inside your testicles and that occurrence leads to low testosterone.
5. Alters DNA
Study clearly show that cell phone radiation and mobile networks were able to alter human DNA in a negative way. When that alternation starts to happen inside testicles you’re in trouble. “These findings have clear implications for the safety of extensive mobile phone use by males of reproductive age, potentially affecting both their fertility and the health and wellbeing of their offspring” (De Iuliis 2009).
6. Damages the leydig cells
Cell phone usage has also been linked to mitochondrial damage inside the leydig cells (the cells that produce testosterone inside testicles).
Add in the fact that cell phones increased the oxidative damage in those exactly same cells and we have ourselves a major problem…
In studies with male rats, exposure caused degeneration in the seminiferous tubules, reduction in the number of Leydig cells and testosterone production as well as increases in luteinizing hormone levels and apoptotic cells.
7. Infertility
The same study that found out about the mitochondrial effects mentioned above, also found out that cell phone radiation and mobile networks cause infertility with lowered sperm motility, volume, and quality.
Makes me wonder why the government endorses the idea of putting Wi-Fi networks inside schools…
Why Carrying Your Cell Phone on Your Body is a Bad Idea...
Regardless of the area exposed to the continuous radiation emitted by your cell phone, there's the potential for harm, although certain areas are clearly more vulnerable than others.
For example, research published in 2009 showed evidence that wearing a cell phone on your hip may weaken an area of your pelvisii. Using an X-ray technique used in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with osteoporosis, researchers measured pelvic bone density in 150 men who regularly carried their cell phones attached to their belts. The men carried their phones for an average of 15 hours each day, and had used cell phones for an average of six years. The researchers found that bone mineral density was lowered on the side of the pelvis where the mobile phones were carried, raising the possibility that bone density could be adversely affected by the electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones.
It's important to realize that as long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call. So wearing a cell phone on your hip for 15 hours a day is giving that area of your body nearly continuous radiation exposure.
Previous studies have found that cell phone radiation can affect men's sperm count, and the quality and motility of their sperm, and this may be a far greater issue than its effect on bone density. One such study, published in PLoS Oneiii found that:
"RF-EMR in both the power density and frequency range of mobile phones enhances mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation by human spermatozoa, decreasing the motility and vitality of these cells while stimulating DNA base adduct formation and, ultimately DNA fragmentation. These findings have clear implications for the safety of extensive mobile phone use by males of reproductive age, potentially affecting both their fertility and the health and wellbeing of their offspring."
Men in particular may want to reconsider carrying their cell phones on their belts or in their pocket, in close proximity of their reproductive organs. In addition, you have a number of other sensitive organs in that general area, including liver, kidneys, colon and bladder—all of which are susceptible to radiation.

Press Briefing on NTP Study With NIEHS Scientist
“Here we are investing in spreading this technology into schools with the assumption that it’s safe when in fact we do not have data on safety, and that’s in fact a huge problem,” Davis stated, “It’s time to give people information about how to protect themselves, because the issue of whether or not to do so has been resolved with this important study from the National Toxicology Program.”
Fine Print Exposed: Hidden Cell Phone Radiation Advice
Berkeley's new Cell Phone Radiation Right To Know Ordinance went into effect on March 21, 2015. In remarks to the council prior to the unanimous passage of the law, City Councilmember, Max Anderson, who championed the Right to Know law said, "The real issue before us tonight is whether or not citizens have the right to information which they can rely on to make decisions. You see a hunger for this information."
Led by the pro bono defense of Larry Lessig, Harvard Constitutional Law Professor and Robert Post, Dean of Yale Law School, the city prevailed against prolonged industry efforts to block the law. In his testimony to the council, Lessig pointed out, "This ordinance is not about a scientific debate. It is simply about giving Berkeley citizens the information they need to make choices about how they use their cellphones."
For over five years, EHT's President, Dr. Devra Davis has worked on Berkeley's Cell Phone Right To Know testifying at several key Berkeley City Council hearings and working closely with Dr. Joel Moskowitz, Director of University of California Berkeley's Center for Family and Community Health, and Ellen Marks, founder of the California Brain Tumor Association, as well as Renee Sharp of the Environmental Working Group, and Prof. Stanton Glantz of the University of California San Francisco, to support better public understanding about how and why to practice safe technology. A predecessor effort by the City of San Francisco is profiled in Davis' award-winning book, Disconnect: the truth about cell phone radiation. Historic footage from the Berkeley Council cell phone hearings of 2015 and 2011 is posted on EHT's Youtube page.
Following its own scientific review, Consumer Reports in November of 2015 advised that consumers keep cellphones out of pants and short pockets in order to keep radiation levels below the tested limits.
Davis pointed out that, "Advisories for Laptops, routers, baby monitor and cordless phone base stations explicitly state these devices should be held at 20 cm or about 8 inches away from the body. Yet it is not uncommon for young school children to hold laptops close to their bodies for hours a day."
In her remarks to the Council, Davis noted, "Democracy rests on the freely given consent of the governed. Where information is withheld, democracy is endangered. People need to know and have a right to know this information so that they can determine whether and how to protect themselves and their families."
In his testimony to the Council, Prof. Glantz concluded that "A cell phone in your pocket or lap emits levels of radiation that can damage human sperm." He added that "I do not recommend this as a form of male birth control, but it certainly does and can have an impact on a man's ability to become a father."
The advisory distance hidden in manuals of all smart phones and other wireless transmitting devices corresponds to the tested distance for radiation compliance, employed before allowing these devices to be sold. Keeping phones directly against the body exceeds government radiation thresholds, which protect users only from getting too hot. For cell phones, the fine print instruction typically states a distance of under an inch--as this is how phones are tested today.
"Consumers should also be aware that even if they follow these instructions, they may not be adequately protected. These safety warnings were never designed with children in mind. Testing applies to a large adult man with a big head. A child's brain is cased in a thinner skull; that's one reason they absorb more microwave radiation. Research on long term use of cell phones is indicating several serious health risks. Cell phones are not toys." advises Dr. Davis.
All cell phone retailers in Berkeley are now required to post or hand out fliers that state:
"To assure safety, the Federal Government requires that cell phones meet radio frequency (RF) exposure guidelines. If you carry or use your phone in a pants or shirt pocket or tucked into a bra when the phone is ON and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation. Refer to the instructions in your phone or user manual for information about how to use your phone safely."
