Mobile phones have revolutionized communications throughout the world. Texting has resulted in a new language barely understood by the pre-mobile phone generation. It is hard to imagine the modern business and younger social world without the mobile phone. Unfortunately, research from across the globe is showing that long-term usage of mobile phones can be damaging to your health. It is associated with brain tumors, memory and concentration problems and rat experiments have found signs of early onset dementia (similar to Alzheimer's - Salford 2003). Mobile phone use without a hands-free kit in a car has been banned in the UK, because of the increased risk of having an accident (Due to the distraction caused by using the phone). The UK Department of Health has also issued advice stating that people should attempt to keep their calls as short as possible, and that, children and young people under the age of 16 should only use their phones in emergencies, based on the current uncertainties in the existing scientific literature.

Your phone communicates at full power when it is connecting to a number. Hold your phone away from your body when you have finished dialing until the person answers. If you are texting, hold it away from you until the text is sent. The parts of the body which are most vulnerable to microwave radiation are the eyes, the breasts and testicles. Other parts of the body which are sensitive are internal soft tissue organs such kidneys, liver, ovaries, etc. Your phone should be kept away from these parts of the body. When your phone is on standby, it communicates (at full power) with the nearest base station regularly to ensure it has the best signal possible. This could be once every 30 minutes if you are stationary in a good signal area. If you are in a poor signal area, it may transmit as often as every 30 seconds as it attempts to get a better signal. If you are on the move, it will transmit frequently.
Mobile phones are suspected to initiate Electrical Hypersensitivity (ES), which can be a very debilitating condition. If you feel you need to use a mobile phone, please read reducing your exposure on reducing your microwave exposure from your current phone and what to look for when you buy a new one.

WHY CELL PHONES ARE DANGEROUS

A cellular phone is basically a radio that sends signals on waves to a base station. The carrier signal generates two types of radiation fields: a near-field plume and a far-field plume. Living organisms, too, generate electromagnetic fields at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organism level; this is called the biofield. Both the near-field and far-field plumes from cell phones and in the environment can wreak havoc with the human biofield, and when the biofield is compromised in any way, says Dr. Carlo, so is metabolism and physiology.

“The near field plume is the one we’re most concerned with. This plume that’s generated within five or six inches of the center of a cell phone’s antenna is determined by the amount of power necessary to carry the signal to the base station,” he explains. “The more power there is, the farther the plume radiates the dangerous information-carrying radio waves.”

A carrier wave oscillates at 1900 megahertz (MHz) in most phones, which is mostly invisible to our biological tissue and doesn’t do damage. The information-carrying secondary wave necessary to interpret voice or data is the problem, says Dr. Carlo. That wave cycles in a hertz (Hz) range familiar to the body. Your heart, for example, beats at two cycles per second, or two Hz. Our bodies recognize the information-carrying wave as an “invader,” setting in place protective biochemical reactions that alter physiology and cause biological problems that include intracellular free-radical buildup, leakage in the blood-brain barrier, genetic damage, disruption of intercellular communication, and an increase in the risk of tumors. The health dangers of recognizing the signal, therefore, aren’t from direct damage, but rather are due to the biochemical responses in the cell.

Here’s what happens:

  • Cellular energy is now used for protection rather than metabolism. Cell membranes harden, keeping nutrients out and waste products in.
  • Waste accumulating inside the cells creates a higher concentration of free radicals, leading to both disruption of DNA repair (micronuclei) and cellular dysfunction.
  • Unwanted cell death occurs, releasing the micronuclei from the disrupted DNA repair into the fluid between cells (interstitial fluid), where they are free to replicate and proliferate. This, says Dr. Carlo, is the most likely mechanism that contributes to cancer.
  • Damage occurs to proteins on the cell membrane, resulting in disruption of intercellular communication. When cells can’t communicate with each other, the result is impaired tissue, organ, and organism function. In the blood-brain barrier, for example, cells can’t keep dangerous chemicals from reaching the brain tissue, which results in damage.

With the background levels of information-carrying radio waves dramatically increasing because of the widespread use of cell phones,Wi-Fi, and other wireless communication, the effects from the near and far-fields are very similar. Overall, says Dr. Carlo, almost all of the acute and chronic symptoms seen in electrosensitive patients can be explained in some part by disrupted intercellular communication. These symptoms of electrosensitivity include inability to sleep, general malaise, and headaches. Could this explain the increase in recent years of conditions such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and anxiety disorder?

“One thing all these conditions have in common is a disruption, to varying degrees, of intercellular communication. When we were growing up, TV antennas were on top of our houses and such waves were up in the sky. Cell phones and Wi-Fi have brought those things down to the street, integrated them into the environment, and that’s absolutely new. The recognition mechanism, where protein vibration sensors on the cell membrane pick up a signal and interpret it as an invader, only works because the body recognizes something it’s never seen before.”

Epidemic curve projections, however, indicate that in 2006, we can expect to see 40,000 to 50,000 cases of brain and eye cancer. This is based on published peer-reviewed studies that allow calculation of risk and construction of epidemic curves. By 2010, says Dr. Carlo, expect that number to be between 400,000 and 500,000 new cases worldwide.

“This means we’re on the beginning curve of an epidemic, with epidemic defined as a change in the occurrence of a disease that is so dramatic in its increase that it portends serious public health consequences,” says Dr. Carlo. “This is what’s not being told to the public. One of the things that I suggest to people who use a cell phone is to use an air tube headset. If you use a wired headset, the current moving through the wire of the headset attracts ambient informational carrying radio waves and thereby increases your exposure.”

World Health Organizaion Classifies Cell Phone Radiation as Class B Carcinogen

Cell phone subscriptions are now estimated at 5.9 billion globally—that's 87 percent of the world population! I think it's safe to say, we've already passed the point of no return when it comes to this technology. But as cell phone use continues to grow unabated, a growing body of researchers is speaking out against the technology, warning that it may have serious biological side effects that must be acknowledged and remedied.

Fortunately, their warnings are slowly but surely beginning to be heard.

On May 31, 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO)/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) issued a report admitting cell phones might indeed cause cancer, classifying radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Class 2B) The classification came in part in response to research showing wireless telephones increase the risk for brain cancer.

According to the press release

"Dr Jonathan Samet (University of Southern California, USA), overall Chairman of the Working Group, indicated that "the evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough to support a conclusion and the 2B classification. The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk."

The Special Dangers Of Cell Phone Electromagnetic Radiation

Because cell phones have such powerful EMFs (usually in the microwave range!) and are held to the head or kept close to the body, they are especially dangerous. (See cell phone studies for links to specific research.)

  • Cell phones emit two kinds of EMFs - microwave electromagnetic radiation from the antenna, and more EMFs from the phone body – both are harmful.
  • 20-80% of the radiation from a phone’s antenna penetrates up to 2 inches into the adult brain.
  • Cell phones have thermal effects (they heat biological tissue) as well as non-thermal effects (affecting natural EMF frequencies)
  • Studies have shown that people who sleep with a cell phone by the bed have poor REM sleep, leading to impaired learning and memory. Long-term effects remain to be seen.
  • When the cell phone signal is held next to the head, brainwaves are altered a full 70% of the time.
  • Many insurance companies are so alarmed by the evidence that they now exclude health issues related to cell phone radiation from coverage.
  • Most brain surgeons limit their cell phone use, and counsel patients never to hold them to their ears.

Yes, electromagnetic radiation can harm human health, and the dangers are all around us. Read what Doctors have to say:

“If Mobile Phones Were a Type of Food, They Simply Would Not be Licensed,"
~Dr. Gerald Hyland, The Lancet

“The evidence for risks from prolonged cell phone and cordless phone use is quite strong. For people who have used them for 10 years or longer, mainly on one side of the head, the risk of malignant brain tumor is doubled for adults and is even higher for persons with first use before age 20.”
~Brain tumor specialist Dr. Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, Orebro University Hospital in Sweden

“There is a strong evidence that EMFs and radio/microwave frequencies are associated with accelerated aging (enhanced cell death and cancer) and moods, depression, suicide, anger, rage and violence, primarily through alteration of cellular calcium ions and the melatonin/serotonin balance.”
~Dr. Neil Cherry of Lincoln University, New Zealand

Is Your Headset Making Matters Worse?

For some time, the standard recommendation to reduce your radiation exposure was to use a headset. But, newer investigations, and the emergence of wireless earpieces (like Bluetooth), turns this idea upside down. These headsets may actually intensify your exposure to harmful radiation because the headset itself acts as an antenna, which is now inserted directly into your ear canal.

Testing has indicated that your cell phone headset may actually raise the amount of radiation emitted by more than 300 percent!

It's vital that you know the pros and cons of cell phone headsets -- especially now that laws requiring "hands-free" cell phone headsets while driving are going in effect all over the United States.

The British Independent Group on Mobile Phones suggested that headsets are an ideal solution only if they were used with filters to stop the headset wire from acting as an effective antenna. One solution is an air-tube headset. These conduct sound, but prevent any radiation from traveling up the wire to your brain.

Are the Dangers of Electromagnetic Radiation A Factor for Your Health?

The dangers of electromagnetic radiation are becoming very evident and associated with many diseases and health problems. Some say it is scientifically impossible for electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to affect us. Some studies prove the cell damage EMF causes.

The Dangers of Electromagnetic Radiation

We all live in a virtual sea of manmade electromagnetic radiation these days—we can’t escape it. We’re bombarded daily with cell phone radiation, smart meter radiation, and WiFi radiation from our computers and other wireless devices.

We are also in dangers of cell tower health risks, as these towers virtually surround us, wherever we are. Some of us are further susceptible to power lines health risks, if we happen to live near them.

In addition, there are low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that constantly envelop us coming from our home electricity and all our appliances.

Is Electromagnetic Radiation Safe?

Most people assume that all this electromagnetic radiation is safe for us. Younger generations have literally grown up in it and can’t remember a time when they weren’t surrounded by it. It “feels” safe. We can’t see the radiation and it’s everywhere—so the assumption is that it must be okay for us.

And besides, aren’t there research studies that have concluded that cell phones and WiFi are safe—or at least claim there is no evidence that they are unsafe? The answer is yes, there are those studies. However, if you locate the funding source for most of them, you’ll find that the corporations that funded them were the very companies who produce cell phones and wireless devices.

And, very importantly, there now exists an overwhelming abundance of independent, peer-reviewed studies from all over the world that have conclusively linked electromagnetic radiation with a wide variety of adverse health effects and serious diseases.
